Nature vs Nurture Do Genes Or Environment Matter More Essay

When I was a child, I was very shy and passive, so I didn’t’t like to speak in public. My mother seriously worried about my introverted character since she had talked with my teacher about the problem. After that, she enrolled me in speech class and when I came home, she asked me whether I presented in class or not. In the day when I expressed my opinions or asked something to my teacher, she praised me highly and her face looked so bright. As her praises reinforced me, I gradually overcame my shyness and I changed into an outgoing person. As many people have begun to pay attention to formation of personality, the debate over nature vs. nurture has raged for a long time and this issue is still controversial. However, as shown the†¦show more content†¦Skinner B.F, who is representative psychologist of behaviorism, said â€Å"Personality is a habit and the habit is acquired by reinforcement and environment.† Skinner proved this theory through an experiment using a pigeon and Skinner box. In the experiment, Skinner put a starving pigeon into the Skinner box and then the pigeon started exploring the new environment. While the pigeon was searching the box, the bird accidently got a food by pushing a lever in the box. After that, the pigeon repeated the same actions to get foods because the food acted a positive reinforcement. This highlights the fact that personality and behavior can be corrected by the positive and negative reinforcements such as rewards and punishments. Similarly, nowadays, behavior modi fication therapy using the reinforcement is developing to treat the ADHD and its effect is also widely accepted by many people. In addition, one local people share certain traits and the traits are also distinguished by regional groups. According to one article that I recently read, Osaka and Tokyo people have very dissimilar personalities. While Osaka people like to talk with other people and they think that relationship is very important, Tokyo people don’t like to speak their mind and they tend to be silent.
